Last month I shared that I am trying to make positive changes to my health and focus more on wellness. This was one of my goals for 2016 and now that we are a quarter of the way into the year I wanted to share my progress (as well as some of the tweaks I have made to my routine).
Most of the modifications I have implemented are small. I don’t believe in fad diets or exercise trends. I tend to stick to what is tried and true. All these things in combination and on a regular basis make me look and feel my best.
Here are the four things I have been doing to look and feel better:
1. Drink More Water. I am sure you have heard this advice before but it is so important and so easy to neglect. I spend tons of money on facial products and makeup but my skin never looks as good as when I make it a point to drink eight full glasses of water each day.
2. Walk More. As a New Yorker I assumed that I was walking a lot. I commute each day and walk to and from the bust stop and then the subway. In my mind I was positive that I was walking way more than the recommended 10,000 steps per day. Then, a few months ago I got a wake-up call when I discovered the health app on my IPhone. Most days I was barely cracking 5,000 steps! After that I bought a pedometer and I have made it a point to get out and be active. I wander around NYC during my lunch hour and I no longer take cabs anywhere. It has been a small but very positive change for me and with the Spring Sun shining it has dramatically affected my mood for the better.
3. Get More Sleep. This is the best advice and yet I find it to be the most difficult to follow. It is very easy to see the differences in skin and complexion when a person doesn’t get enough sleep and yet there are so many nights where I am in bed all cozy, watching Netflix and I don’t want it to end. I know I should go to sleep and yet I don’t want to close my eyes and give away the moments of “me time” that I am enjoying. If I stay up, it ruins the next morning for me. I am tired, so I hit snooze and then I run around like a crazy person (and I also have to allot time I don’t have to covering up the dark circles under my eyes). The Fitbit that I have been wearing to track my walking also monitors my sleep. Something about having factual information on how little I have been sleeping has motivated me to reach my goal of at least seven hours per night.
4. Take Vitamins. I have to confess that this is a new one for me. I have never taken vitamins as an adult. I think it has something to do with my past experiences. When I was little my Mom would force me to choke down a chalky chewable and when I was pregnant my prenatal vitamins made me so sick. I started to realize earlier this year that I really needed to take them though to because there were gaps in my nutrition based on the foods I eat.
I am not a huge fruit and veggie person so I decided to pick up a bottle of Nature Made‘s Vitamin C during my last trip to Walmart. Vitamin C provides antioxidant support and helps support the immune system. I also grabbed a bottle of Vitamin B12 for energy!
