Monthly Archives: January 2014

It’s that time again!  I hope you all had a great week!  I sure did!  Some of the highlights have been:

1.  I went on a family movie date to see the Nut Job in 3D with the hubby and Taylor.  It was super cute and I may or may not have cried a little bit at the end.

2.  If you follow me on Facebook, you probably already know that I got an Iphone 5s this week!  I have always been an android girl so this is a big change for me.  I went from having a big, honking Samsungy Galaxy S2 to this tiny Iphone.  It feels very delicate.  The selling point for me was being able to link it up to my Ipad.  Plus, I can now see Emojis and I love that I can customize the icons and wallpaper.  I’ve already ordered a gorgeous case.  I will post some pics when I get it.  Do you guys have any cool apps to recommend?

3.  I finally bit the bullet and changed the website’s theme!  I have been wanting to do it for a while but I was scared.  When I decided to start this blog I mostly just focused on the fun/creative/writing aspect.  I did not give very much thought to all the backend work (such as blog design).  Lately, I have been dealing with all these little glitches (like the website being skewed all the way to the left and the font being smaller than I want) and finally I just decided to reformat from scratch.  I also wanted to switch from black (which I liked in the beginning) to a cleaner white look.  I was terrified that something would happen and the change would ruin everything but I am ecstatic to say that it was a really smooth, seamless transition and all the things that I have been agonizing about (font, layout, etc.) have been rectified.  I wish I would have known how simple it would be because I would have done it a lot sooner.  What do you guys think of our new look?

4.  I got a chance to try Glam Glow’s Bright Mud Eye Treatment last weekend and I just love it!  It is very easy and simple to use.  It comes with sealed pods that almost look like contact lenses containers.  You are supposed to use one pod for each eye but I was able to treat both eyes with just one (which is great because this stuff is not cheap).  You dab the gel-like formula under your eyes, wait three minutes and wipe it off with a tissue.  I am a big fan of beauty solutions that take under five minutes!  I really think it made a difference as well.  I could feel it tingling while it was on and definitely noticed that the lines and dark circles under my eyes were reduced afterwards.  I definitely recommend it!  I would post a pic but I am not quite ready to show closeups of my undereye wrinkles.  I have a lot of respect for the bloggers that do but i am not that brave yet.

5.  I am so looking forward to the Superbowl!  I wanted to wear something to support the Broncos (since the hubs is a big Peyton Manning fan) so I purchased a cute long-sleeved favorite tee and orange infinity scarf from the Gap.  This way I am showing team spirit and I can wear them again separately.

I hope you all have a nice weekend!  Enjoy the Superbowl!

Superbowl Noshes!

I am not a huge football fan. Scratch that. What I should say is that I am not a huge sports fan in general. I am a casual observer at best. I go to a few Yankee games each Summer. I do this to support my husband’s favorite team, wear my supercute Victoria’s Secret Pink Yankees shirt, do the wave and drink copious amounts of beer. I barely watch the game. Same goes for the Superbowl. I must admit, I enjoy the occasional dabble in fantasy football at I am SUPER excited for it this weekend but mostly because I am hoping to win some money, watch the commercials and half-time show and eat delicious things. My friends are huge footballs fans and placed bets on FanDuel for the playoffs but I didn’t even realise there were even playoff games! That’s how little I know about football. I’m just in it for the fun and food. Speaking of food…

Here are some recipes for delicious Superbowl noshes:

Buffalo Chicken Dip

Buffalo Chicken Dip

This recipe from the fab housewife looks delicious! I love that it is a bit spicy. My girlfriend makes this dip with Perdue Shortcuts and it comes out great. That might be an extra time-saver.

Spicy Whiskey BBQ Sliders

Everything Ree makes is scrumptious and these look like they will be no exception. My mouth waters looking at the picture!

Interstate Chili

Interstate Chili

This is my go-to Chili recipe. It is unbelievably good. The only thing I change is to add beans (because my family likes them) but otherwise Sunny’s recipe is perfect and I would not change a thing.

Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies

Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies

These are on my menu for the Superbowl! Crispy, salty bacon paired with chocolate chip cookies! WHAT?!? Sounds like the perfect marriage to me!

Kit-Kat M&M Cake

Kit Kat Cake

I made one of these a few years ago with a New York Giants theme and it was the HIT of the party I attended. Here are some crappy cell phone pictures of it. (Sorry, they are all I have.)

Giants Cake2 Giants Cake

I bought the custom M&Ms here but I think it might be too late for shipping now. Fret not, you can still grab a few big bags of regular M&Ms and pick out the colors of your team to decorate the top. I’m sure your family wont mind eating the leftover colors for the next few weeks. 🙂 Here is a link to a coupon for M&Ms, too.

I hope you all have a fabulous time watching the game. Make note of your favorite commericials because I will be sharing my picks on Monday and I would love to hear your input.

Slutty Brownies

Finished Brownie 2 Editted

I first came across these delicious things about a year ago on (where else) Pinterest.  I think the Londoner was the first to publish the recipe but I have seen it all over the internet so I am not sure who to give the credit to.

These baked goods give you a significant amount of bang for your buck.  They are cheap, super easy to make and people FREAK OUT over them.  They look very impressive and yet they are so simple.

This is the cast of characters…you dont have to have white wine while you make them – red will also do.  You can make the cookie dough and brownie mix from scratch but I dont do that unless it will add something to the recipe.  If I can make it from a box and it is delicious I am going that route.  It’s all about time management people!

Cast of Characters

Ready for a few easy steps?

Okay, here we go.  Preheat your oven to 350 and grease a 9 x 13 rectangular glass baking dish.  (Or if you want to make a smaller batch you can use a square 8 x 8 dish and one log of cookie dough/box of brownie mix/less oreos.  Your call.)

Next, have your daughter smoosh two logs of cookie dough into the bottom of it while you drink wine.

Then, add a layer of double-stuffed oreos.

Oreo Layer

Next, mix up two boxes of brownie mix according to the box’s directions and pour it on top of the Oreo and cookie dough layers.

Brownie Layer Editted

Put the pan in the oven for about an hour.  If you like your brownies on the raw side, you should start checking them at 45 minutes.  I like them a little more well done.  I am all about crispy edges, a moist middle and chewiness – so I tend to cook them longer.  When I can shake the pan from side to side and it doesnt jiggle and I can put a knife in the center and have it come out clean – I consider that done.

Guess who just jumped on the Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze Spray Paint bandwagon?  THIS GIRL!

Spray Paint

I have been reading about the magical properties of this product on Young House Love and Live Love DIY (along with many other DIY blogs) and have been wanting to try it for a while.  After buying a new darker kitchen table, I decided that my salt and pepper grinders and napkin holder would not match.  (The silver finish was too jarring on the darker table.)

Before S&P

Before Napkin Holder

I looked all over the internet for something in an oil rubbed bronze finish (to go with the chandelier in the kitchen) and came up empty.  Then, I remembered that I had a brand new can of spray paint that would make them look perfect!  I used painter’s tape to seal the inside of the salt/pepper grinders and headed outside for some spraying.  Look how sparkly and nice they look in the Sun!  I left them outside for about five hours in the Sun and then I moved them into the laundry room to let them fully cure for another two days.

During Sparkles

I know salt and pepper grinders and a napkin holder are small details but they make a big difference on my table and I am really pleased with how well it worked.  It adhered perfectly (with no sanding) and even when I use the grinders there is no flaking paint.  So far so good.

Gorgeous After

I cant wait to use this spray paint on the door knobs/hinges around the house.  That is a project I would like to accomplish soon (as the whole mismatched gold/silver door knob situation happening currently drives me batty).  Do you guys have any experience with this spray paint or spraying door hardware?  What is next on your DIY agenda?

Book Him, Danno!

 Book heart

I cant believe that my blog has been up for over a month and I have neglected to post about books!  I am an avid reader.  I think I developed this love of books in part because I am a extremely clumsy and so sports were not really “my thing”.  I have an uninterrupted two hour window each day during my commute to/from work where I am able to read and I love it.

Some noteable books that I have read this past year have been:

The Mystery of Mercy Close by Marian Keyes

Mystery of Mercy Close

This was a fabulous book and it also helped me to discover Marian Keyes as an author.  She has about ten other books out that I quickly devoured.  Watermelon (another book about the Walsh Sisters) was hilarious and my favorite.  If you have not read any Marian Keyes books you should start with that one.

Broken Harbour by Tana French

Broken Harbor

Broken Harbour is much like Gone Girl in that it is a bit dark, mysterious and you wont be able to put it down.  It is the fourth in a series by Tana French but I read it first because I was unaware of the other three when I received this recommendation.  I read all her books after this one and it wasn’t a big deal that I read them out of order.  They were all still fabulous.  I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this series that is supposed to be released this Summer.

My Fair Lazy by Jen Lancaster

My Fair Lazy

This is Jen Lancaster’s latest installment.  She is hilarious, witty, sarcastic and a great writer.  That being said, this book was not my favorite.  If this was her only book, I probably would have loved it but it isn’t and I know she can do better.  I almost feel like she just phoned the last few books in.  I preferred Bitter is the New Black and Pretty in Plaid.  If you have not read a Jen Lancaster book you should start with those.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

I loved this book!  It was sharp, heartwarming, and so entertaining.  When I started reading it, I thought it was going to be a shallow book that tried to capitalize on Seattle’s trendy Mommy scene.  I was totally and pleasantly wrong.  I also learned a few facts about Antarctica in the process (which was an added bonus.)  This may have been my favorite book of the year.

Currently, I am without a book.  That’s a scary thought.  What have you read this year that you absolutely loved and wish to share with me?  What have you heard good things about that you cant wait to dig into?
