Even though it took it’s sweet time arriving, Summer is officially in full swing and the weather in NYC has been gorgeous! Our weekends have been packed so I have not made it to the beach just yet but we are heading there next weekend for a little mini-break. I spent some time this past weekend prepping for it and I figured I would share the process with you guys.
Here is how I get my body beach ready:
This is a super important step! Exfoliation clears the dead skin off your body and leaves it smooth and soft. I exfoliate in the shower and switch up the products I use depending on what I have on hand. I usually receive a few bath sets as gifts each Christmas so I always have a scrub or two on hand. Lately, I have been using the coconut cream one above and I am totally obsessed! In a pinch I just mix a tablespoon or two of brown sugar in with my shower gel or some coconut oil and it works perfectly. Just remember to make it nice and grainy.
I am going to let you in on a little secret. I hate to shave! I always have and I hate it even more when I am on vacation. I would much rather have my legs waxed every six to eight weeks than be bothered to waste time each day shaving them. Less time shaving equals more time to enjoy a cold drink on the beach!
I started to get my legs and underarms waxed at a salon a few years ago and loved the results (but not the price tag). I had to stop because I couldn’t afford it. Then, I found Sally Hansen‘s at home waxing kits and I have been using them on and off ever since. I pick mine up at my local CVS. They have a huge selection of Sally Hansen products.
At first, I was scared that I would not be able to force myself to rip the wax strip off or that I would mess it up but the kits are pretty inexpensive at about $10 each so I figured I would risk it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
The strips come pre-waxed and you don’t even have to heat them with the microwave! You just rub them between your palms to warm them up, smooth them on in the direction of hair growth and pull off the strip. The results last up to 8 weeks! You can find more information on waxing (along with some helpful videos) here.
It really does not hurt and seeing the amount of hair it pulls out from the root is so oddly rewarding.
Depending on where I am heading, I either tan at home using a lotion with self-tanner built in or I get a spray tan. If you are travelling to a location where you are going to be in a chlorinated pool or a hot tub you need to skip the spray tan! They don’t mix well and you will end up spotted and streaky. Trust me – it’s not a good look! A lotion with a build-able tanning product built in will mostly survive those things without leaving you streaky.
Now that your body is hair-free make sure to moisturize each night to keep your skin soft. I have been using coconut oil after I get out of the shower and I love the way it smells and hydrates my skin. Before I started using it I assumed it would be greasy but it is not at all! My skin sucks it right up and it leaves it moisturized and so soft.
5. Get A Pedi
If you can do this yourself than I am totally jealous because I cant paint my digits without getting polish all over my cuticles and creating a gloppy, uneven mess. It is much faster for me to go to a salon and spend a few dollars on a professional pedicure than waste my time trying to pain my own nails. I tend to choose a bright tropical color for the Summer or a bright white.
Those are my tips on how I prep my body for the beach. Do you do anything special to get glowing skin for Summer? Leave me your tips in the comments!
