New York City Winters are no joke. Thankfully, this one has been pretty mild so far. I know it is coming though. Things are going smoothly and then of a sudden it’s below zero, there are 20 inches of snow on the ground, I can’t find one my gloves, I realize I don’t own a shovel and we have run out of milk. At the end of the day, I always survive though…even if it means paying neighborhood kids to dig out this shovel-less girl’s car.
Even though I usually slack in the domestic area of preparedness, I can assure you that my hair still looks good. All kidding aside though, as a blonde I have be extra careful with my mane in the colder temps because it tends to get very dry.
Some of the ways I keep my hair shiny and healthy in the Winter are:
1. Get Regular Trims.
My natural inclination is to never get a hair cut. Whenever my stylist asks if I want a cut my inner monologue sounds like this, “I want to be a mermaid. I want to let my hair grow down to my feet. No cut! No cut!” For me a haircut is like going to bed at a reasonable hour. It’s no fun now but if I don’t do it I am going to look like a hot mess in the future. Trims are so important in the colder temps because hair is drier and more prone to breakage. If you don’t keep your ends healthy, breakage will travel up the hair shaft and cause you a trouble later! Bite the bullet and get that trim.
2. Skip Super Hot Showers.
How awesome is a steaming hot shower in the Winter? Mmmmmm. Love. Unfortunately, now that I have put that thought in your head I have to tell you to skip them. I know! I am the worst! But seriously, hot showers strip your hair and skin of moisture. I try to limit myself to one really good one a week or I take a super hot bath with my hair up in a shower cap with a leave in conditioner or hair mask on it and then moisturize my skin really well afterwards. One of my favorite treatments is Pantene Pro-V’s Moisture Renewal 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner. I put it on while I soak in the tub and then rinse while I am done. It leaves my hair really shiny and healthy.
3. No Heat Styling.
I am not going to tell you to leave the house or go to sleep with wet hair. That is just crazy and even though it would probably be better for your tresses, I don’t know how happy you will be when you have a cold. In the Winter months I try to put my hair up in a towel to dry as long as possible and then I finish it off with a bit of hot air from my drier right before leaving the house or going to bed. I also do my best to skip the flat iron and curling wand.
4. Use A Fabulous Shampoo and Conditioner.
Lately, I have been using the Pantene Pro-V Repair & Protect Collection to fix the damage I cause by bleaching my hair. Pantene’s shampoos and conditioners contain Pro-V nutrients to help prevent and repair the signs of damage, making hair so healthy it shines.
I have used Pantene off and on since I was young. I remember watching the commercials with my Mom in the 90’s when her favorite actress, Hunter Tylo (from the Bold and the Beautiful) was in them. They had just started doing that genius ad campaign where the models would be facing away from the camera and they would drop their hair and let it cascade down their backs. It was so healthy and shiny and luxurious-looking. I was in junior high and that was when I first started recognizing brands. After those commercials I desperately wanted to try Pantene. Thankfully, it was not that expensive (since my parents had five kids and not a huge shampoo/conditioner budget) and my Mom went out and bought it for me. It did not disappoint and I have been a fan ever since.
I still use it to this day because I love how well it works. I switch my brands periodically but I always return to Pantene. I also really dig how accessible it is. They carry it at all the drugstores and supermarkets by me but I think the best place to order it from is from Amazon. I love the convenience of ordering online and having my items shipped right to my house for free. I had four boxes dropped off today alone. Thank goodness for Prime! Amazon has the full line that I have been using including Pantene Pro-V Repair & Protect Miracle Repairing Shampoo, Pantene Pro-V Repair & Protect Miracle Protecting Conditioner and Pantene Pro-V Airspray Flexible Hold Hairspray.
